Gallery Dunga. Unique Designs Down by the Old Harbour
Unique Designs Down by the Old Harbour
After decades of male-dominated presence it was time to bring a feminine and artistic touch down to the Old Harbour, which Gallerí Dunga does in spades. The gallery was opened by two female entrepreneurs and includes innovative designs which capture the details and essence of Icelandic culture and nature through an artistic eye.
The gallery was opened last year by ceramic artist Ingibjörg Klemenz (Inga) and designer Gunnhildur Þórarinsdóttir (Dunna) who combined their nicknames to form the name ‘Dunga’. They took over from the fishermen who formerly used the hut for baiting and turned it into a gallery to present a broad selection of elegant designs, including clothing, jewellery, paintings, ceramics and various other elegant ornaments. In addition to their own creative designs Inga and Dunna offer a selection from ten additional designers – all of whom are female.
All the designers have the common theme that everything that is Icelandic and they primarily use Icelandic materials and motifs in their works. You’ll find classy bracelets, purses and even neckties made out of fish-leather and a fish-leather belt, which is, of course, the perfect gift for the fisherman; you’ll find various clothing items which make stylish and modernised use of Icelandic wool; you’ll find abstract and portrait paintings of the Icelandic culture; you’ll find unique jewellery made out of dried bladder-wrack seaweed; Seaweed jewellery may not sound like much on paper but that just goes to show how adept Dunga’s designers are in finding beauty in the mundane.
And that’s just the tip of the Iceberg! The only way to truly experience what is doing is simply by stopping by – and that should be easy since it’s only a few minutes stroll from downtown Reykjavík.
Being an open gallery, you’ll commonly find Inga busy by her ceramic ovens or painting detailed patterns on her unique ceramic line of products.
