Almar Bakery
Stone-baked Health
Travelling the Ring Road’s southern fork, you have probably been driving long enough to take a break when you reach the garden town of Hveragerði. Nestled under the mountains that separate Hveragerði and Reykjavik, steam rises up from hot pools as this is one of Iceland’s most prolific geothermal areas. Earthquakes have shaken things up a bit, too - but the more likely cause of the rumbling is your stomach hoping to be refilled!

At the heart of the shoppingcentre stands Almar Bakery with its stone-baked bread, cooked in geothermally-heated ovens. They have a whole range of healthy breads, buns, pastries, pasta and sandwiches, cakes and biscuits. A cheap snack is the delicious, freshly-made soup. As much as possible, ingredients are organic local produce. In good weather, you can eat outside. It’s the ideal place for a healthy break and a chance to stock up for your onward journey. And the earthquakes? Don’t miss out on the earthquake simulator in the Information Centre! It has some surprises!
